Conversation with dropbox.

Dawson, Dec 22, 2:21 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

We have already provided you with the details of this deletion and there is no further action I can take regarding this. If you have any other questions regarding other issues I’d be happy to help.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 21, 9:54 AM:

so this is being classified as user error? and nothing is going to be done about this?

because i can tell its 100% that i did not delete these files.

can this issue be escalated? Or what is my further course of action on this?

i would like to continue using dropbox, but if its unreliable like this, then i will have to make alternative arrangements.

Dawson, Dec 21, 9:47 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

They were deleted by the user Aleksey Voznesenski on the device Albinotron on the 6th of November 2015.

These deletions occurred separately to the others so weren’t seen immediately, as no event links were provided. I found the deletions in your events page. This is where you can see and restore them when you need to.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 21, 4:40 AM:

ok, so who and when deleted this? i can’t see the information.. which computer initiated the delete? and when. And why weren’t the files showing up for you before when i asked about them? You told me they where never uploaded.

Also you understand this is a very serious issue right? Lots of people rely on dropbox to keep their files. This makes it unacceptable to use as a back up service for important files.

This is information that needs to be available to users and potential customers.

Dawson, Dec 21, 4:35 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

The system says it was deleted but that’s all the information we get on our end. We can see who, when, and where but not the why. If it happens again then please let us know and we can investigate further.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 21, 4:07 AM:

was this a bug in the system? is there something i did to cause this? can this be prevented in the future.

In a different set of circumstances this could be a huge issue!

Dawson, Dec 21, 4:04 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

I’ve found and restored the files that you indicated. Any files you may have already restored were not affected. If you find additional files that are missing, please let me know their names and locations and I’ll be happy to look for them.

Please note that it may take some time for the restorations to sync back to your account.

If you have questions about the restore process or file deletions, you can read more here:

If there’s anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 18, 9:51 AM:

my event log says those files where indeeed added. So the question is where did they go?

here is a gif about what happens when i click on it:

you understand, how rendering from a software package works, right? they are all rendered and save sequentially to the folder. How else can i save them to dropbox?

Dawson, Dec 18, 9:44 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

If you check out your events page and change the date to the 6th of November, you’ll see that the file branches_002_0016.png was not uploaded to Dropbox with other files of similar description. From what we can see, this file was not added or uploaded to Dropbox. In this case you’ll have to examine your method of saving to Dropbox.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 17, 7:19 AM:

do you understand how this works? I work and render directly to drop box. its my working folder.

i set the render path in cinema4D ( my 3d appicaltion) and it renders out the frames sequentially. into the drop box folder.

i then make a gif out of the files with photoshop. if the files where missing. then i would get missing frame errors.

since this gif exists:

and it has all the frames. It means that dropbox somehow deleted the files from my renders folder. This is the only place they have existed.

can you check the logs for 06-Nov 20:57 UTC +1:00
these files where definitly there. both because my application renders sequentially and because i have a gif that i made from those files. there is not situations where i would go in and delete 4 files.

My issue isn’t recovering the files. in this case it is easy to recover them. My issue that dropbox did not back them up and has no way of recovering them. which is what im paying for.

Dawson, Dec 17, 6:00 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

I am very sorry but I do not believe we can recover your files since they were never uploaded to Dropbox.

The Dropbox folder is just a normal folder on your computer. When you drag files to it you are moving them and not copying them. If you deleted the files from the Dropbox folder before they finished uploading then there is nothing I can do to restore them. Dropbox syncs folders first and then files from smallest to largest, so your account may have some of the files. You can log into to see what Dropbox has.

Also, if you attempted to upload a shortcut file (LNK in Windows, Alias file in Mac OS) please note that Dropbox will only sync the shortcut file rather than the actual file or folder to which the shortcut points.

If you have a backup, or haven’t emptied the Trash, you may be able to get those files back. Otherwise, I’m sorry to say that you may have deleted your own copies of those files. Also, if you moved the files out of the Dropbox folder and didn’t delete them then they would still be on your computer. Try your computer’s “file search” feature to search all of your disk drives.

Good luck! Please contact us if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 16, 5:39 AM:

as in the screenshot, this is the folder: “3d stuff\Branches\renders\branches_002″
on the 6th of november the files where there, since i made a gif with them. so between then and now they dissapeared.

Dawson, Dec 16, 5:36 AM:

Hi Aleksey,

Thanks for getting back to me!

Can you tell me the name of the folder in which these files were located? Also, the date in which you think the files were deleted?

The more information we receive the quicker we can locate said files.

Aleksey Voznesenski, Dec 16, 5:23 AM:

i need to know where those files went…
as you can see they are missing. one folder up there is a gif i made on the 6th of november and all the files where there..

the drop down menu on the events page doesnt show the folder where that file was:

there is also no search on the events page…

I deal with a very large amount of files. can dropbox handle this?
maybe this is the wrong service for my needs.

Last Week in my world

So i thought i’d use my blog to write little pieces about stuff happening in my 3d/vfx/mograph world.

Finally had the combination of free time and motivation to work on some personal projects. Decided to make a monthly wallpaper for Smashing magazine. While working on it realized that working on personal projects somehow manages to be a lot more stressful than on paid work. On paid work i understand that i get paid not only for knowing how cinema4D works, but also for knowing how it doesn’t work and how to get around its shortcomings, and when on a job, i just find a work around and move on, because time is money 🙂 But on personal projects my mild OCD doesn’t let me just leave it and i have to dig down and find exactly what is causing the problem… so something that i could finish in a couple of hours ends up taking days..

Dropbox, i love dropbox, but it really failed me this week. I found that some files from a rendered sequence where missing from the folder… And i definitly, didn’t delete them, coz why would i go in and delete frames 16-20?

Screenshot 2015-12-17 16_10_39-branches_002

After a lengthy conversation with support, after them saying the files where never uploaded, and then after i showed em logs which say they where indeed uploaded, they say that I deleted the files, my faith in them is severely diminished…

Here is the entire conversation if anyone is interested, with screenshots

No idea what to do about this… They refuse to take responsibility, and i really don’t like that not only it doesn’t work as a backup, it just straight out eats my files… Here it was just a few frames, but at another point in time it could be more important stuff.

Blast from the past

Rediscovered this plugin, i just love it! Get it here: //

There are a bunch of nifty things in there, but Transform is my favorite

Ah yeah, and nearly forgot. There are sales on both 3D-Coat and Thea render for Cinema4D.

3d coat is $100 off!

And Thea render for c4d is 95 Eur off, so its only 300EUR till the 12th January! Read my review and then go grab a copy! You wont be sorry!

yup, yup, a node material system for cinema4D!

super great stuff, get the plugin here: //

Thea Render 1.5 Review

What is Thea?

Thea is a hybrid GPU and CPU renderer with plugins for a bunch of applications. I use cinema4D so that’s the awesomeness im going to cover here.
The GPU part (the super fast part) is CUDA based, so you will need an Nvidia card. so if you have a new mac pro, this isn’t going to be super useful to you.
Read my hardware building article here //

Grab the full functional ( watermarked) demo here:

[note]: you have to install both the c4d plugin and the standalone studio. Or you will experience crashes and other strange behaviour

 [hm_content_toc title=”Table of contents” headers=”h1, h3″]

Lets get started with a quick video overview of how Thea render works inside cinema4D.

So that’s awesome right? But how does it handle large scenes with forests you may ask? Well have a look here. It does it amazingly!

Ok that’s great, but what if i want to set up a studio for my product shots? Also easy as pie!

Something that i missed earlier ( too many new features coming in) Is that if you tick “continous with material change” in the “ir” drop down menu of dark room, you dont have to re-transfer the scene to see changes you made in materials!

material realtime

And what about the materials? are they difficult to set up? Nope, pretty straight forward.

Mograph Shaders

And some love for the mograph Color shader! Thea supports the color shader in all its loveliness. The mograph multi shader is in the works apparantly. Hopefully that will come soon.

Can’t be this great and not have any draw backs can it? yeah, there are some things it can’t do yet, but they are working on it really hard.

In Summary

  1. Can’t hide an object and keep its reflections – this unfortunately is a permanent limitation, the render engine is physically real, so you will have to hide your reflection planes like photographers. Or multi pass.
  2. X-particles – Geometry render fines, so fluids, and particles which have geometric shapes applied will render find. For the rest you will have to do some compositing. But they are really excitied about this plugin and hopefully soon there will be support.
  3. Hair, If you turn on geometry it works. Its kinda slows the whole thing down, but it does work. The actual render engine has hair on the roadmap, but there is no solid date for the release of that. edit: significant progress has been made, since i wrote this. still not seamless, but much better than before.
  4. Some shaders dont bake properly, like 3d noise/gradients. Most stuff is baked and transferred pretty well. but it is baked, so if you get pixelation you will have to increase the texture baking size.
  5. Motion blur is currently not supported by the Thea cinema4D plugin. But hopefully it wont be too long. Development is moving along great!
  6. 32bit output is not supported for animations in the c4d plugin. ie through the picture viewer. Darkroom can output 32bit stills. So if your workflow relies on 32bit images, write an emails and explain how much you need it 🙂

Rendering Guide

So how do you actually render out animations with Thea in c4d? Well here is a quick guide of stuff you need to know

  1. You have to render animations with c4d picture viewer.
  2. Disable linear workflow
  3. Make sure your “production render” is set to “Presto” by default its set to TR1.
  4. Xparticles need to be outside system sometimes and cached   This seems to have been fixed now 🙂

Extra Materials?

Yes there is a pretty large collection here://

and other resources here:

But unfortunately there is no way to get the trees they have on the thea site into c4d. they are only for thea, and programs that support thea instance objects ( sketchup apparantly is one). But hey, there are plenty of places on the internet to grab trees. Cinema 4d’s content browser has a bunch that ship with it!

Also there is a Substance -> Thea converter. It’s still not 100% accurate, but they are working on it, and it looks really promising!

Render farms

One of the other big advantages of Thea over its competition is the availability of 3rd party render farms. And the ability to purchase render nodes at discounted prices. You get 2 included with your purchase, you can buy extra ones either for 49 euro per node. or 30 nodes for 395 euro.

Some other engines, don’t provide or sell node licenses. so you have to buy a separate license for each computer you are using to network render. This also makes it prohibitively expensive for render farms to support that render.

You can find a list of render farms here:

Newton render farm is by far my favorite. The guy is super helpful: //

And finally, the conclusion. I love thea render. its crazy fast. It has a tonne of supported features, with more constantly coming in. Great developers, reasonably priced. And most importantly there are render farms that support it, so you are not stuck building your own farm or tied to the developers service.

So go grab a trial version from the link below and tell me what you think of it!
